Some perfumes get noticed before you say a word, while others stay close, like a crisp shirt or a sunny afternoon in Barcelona. Knowing how to choose a perfume based on your personality isn’t about fitting into a label, but about recognising which side of yourself you want to express: the calmest, the brightest, the most intense or the most unexpected.
We see it every day in our perfumery in the heart of Barcelona: the most helpful question isn’t “which perfume is trending?” but “how do you want to feel when you wear it?”. From there, choosing becomes much easier.
How to choose a perfume based on your personality without falling into clichés
Personality is a good starting point, but not a fixed diagnosis. A reserved person can love an amber perfume for a night out; an outgoing one can find their signature in a clean, quiet musk. Perfume works best when it goes along with your intention, not when it tries to sum you up completely.
Think too about what you like outside the perfumery. If you’re drawn to bright spaces, white clothes, freshly cut citrus or sea air, you’ll probably connect with fresh, luminous compositions. If you prefer soft fabrics, candles, coffee, spices or long nights, you may be looking for more enveloping notes.
You don’t need to memorise ingredients: just notice what gives you an immediate reaction. To make it easier, here are four profiles with Luzaris fragrances that suit each one.
For a fresh, active and natural personality
Citrus, aquatic, green and aromatic fragrances suit those who want lightness without giving up presence. They convey cleanliness, movement and clarity, and are perfect for work, warm days and anyone who prefers their perfume to be noticed up close.
- Alba BCN: the energy of Barcelona at dawn, with lemon, spearmint, rosemary and basil.
- Azul Sereno: cypress, lemon and oak, like the calm of the sea on a clear day.
- Brisa Marina INTENSE: sea salt and sage in extrait form, for a fresh scent that lasts longer.
Fresh doesn’t have to mean fleeting. If very clean perfumes feel too discreet to you, look for a woody base or a higher concentration.
For a romantic, creative or dreamy personality
This is where flowers, juicy fruits and soft, sweet accords shine. Not all florals are classic: a white flower with fruit or a rose with musk can feel very modern.
- Jardín Claro: ripe pears and white freesias, like a secret garden on Montjuïc.
- Rosa Musc: velvety plum, musk and heliotrope for a delicate, addictive femininity.
- Camino Azul: orange blossom, bergamot and vanilla under the Mediterranean sky.
If you like sweet perfumes but worry they’ll be too intense, choose formulas where vanilla blends with citrus or flowers. They keep the warmth but breathe better.
For a confident, magnetic and sophisticated personality
Woody, spicy and amber notes have a presence people remember. Saffron, oud, amber, sandalwood or vanilla project confidence, mystery and elegance. They’re ideal for autumn, winter, dinners or any moment when you want to leave a mark.
- Brillo Ámbar: jasmine, saffron and ambergris, sophisticated and luminous at once.
- Noche Extrema: mandarin, saffron and nutmeg over vanilla, amber and sandalwood.
- Tonka de Oro: tonka, oud and dark rose for an intense, almost magical aura.
If you want intensity without heaviness, apply them sparingly: with deep perfumes, less is usually more elegant.
For a free, curious personality that’s hard to pin down
Unisex fragrances are ideal ground when you don’t want to follow traditional codes. They’re for people who enjoy discovering nuances and would rather be asked what they’re wearing than have their scent recognised instantly.
- Humo Dulce: dark tobacco and vanilla, like a secret candlelit library in El Born.
- Oud de Noche: oud, rose and vanilla, an elegant whisper for a night on Passeig de Gràcia.
- Alma Urbana: fresh and woody, for the cosmopolitan spirit of the city.
With this profile, it pays to test without prejudice. A note that sounds intense on paper can melt softly into the skin, and vice versa.
Your routine also shapes the ideal perfume
Personality guides you, but context decides a lot. For a long working day, a fresh, sheer floral or musky fragrance is a comfortable choice. For a date, a dinner or an event, you can turn up the intensity with amber, gourmand or spicy accords.
You don’t need a single perfume for everything. Having two or three options lets your scent follow your rhythm: a light one for every day, a more enveloping one for the evening, and perhaps a special one for stepping out of your comfort zone. With our Eau de Parfum promotions, building that small fragrance wardrobe is easier than it seems.
Concentration changes the experience too. Our Eau de Parfum offer a balanced trail and good longevity for everyday wear. The Extrait de Parfum INTENSE have more richness and staying power, although they don’t always project more: some stay close to the skin with a very elegant depth.
Test the perfume slowly and on your own skin
A paper strip helps you rule things out, but not decide. Spray once or twice on your wrist or forearm, don’t rub, and give it at least four hours before judging. Ask yourself whether you still like it when the intensity fades and whether it blends with your skin. If you wonder why the same perfume smells different on you than on someone else, we explain it in why perfume smells different on each skin.
If you don’t know where to start, our AI fragrance test suggests the Luzaris scents that best match your tastes and the kind of trail you want, in 30 seconds. After that, the most reliable approach is to live with them: the Luzaris Discovery Sets include five fragrances for €9.90, and you can build your own from our 32 scents, for example one from each profile in this article.
Common mistakes when looking for a personal fragrance
- Buying just because it smells good on someone else. You may love it and still find it doesn’t express what you want to feel.
- Deciding in the first thirty seconds. Many fragrances change completely as they dry down.
- Applying more to compensate. If you want a stronger trail, you may need another concentration or a fuller fragrance family, not more sprays. We cover it in how to apply perfume correctly.
- Ruling out a fragrance because of its label. Perfume doesn’t ask permission from ideas of feminine, masculine or age-appropriate. It asks for affinity.
Find yours at Luzaris
Come and try them at our shop at Carrer de Boters 11, in the heart of Barcelona, where we’ll help you find the fragrance that suits you, or start from home with the test and a Discovery Set. The right scent doesn’t have to shout who you are. It’s enough that, when you smell it again hours later, you think: yes, this is exactly how I wanted to feel today.
