The same perfume can open with clean citrus and luminous florals on one person, and turn sweeter, warmer or woodier on another. It isn’t just your imagination: it’s the way the fragrance meets your skin. Understanding why perfume smells different on each skin helps you choose a scent that doesn’t just win you over in the first second, but stays with you all day long.
At Luzaris we see it every day in our perfumery in the heart of Barcelona: two people try the same fragrance and each discovers a different perfume. That’s why we believe the best test never happens on a paper strip alone, but on your skin, at your own pace and in your everyday life.
Why perfume changes on contact with the skin
A perfume is built in layers that evaporate at different speeds:
- Top notes: bergamot, mandarin, pear or pink pepper. Fresh, lively and immediate.
- Heart notes: flowers, juicy fruits, spices or creamy accords. They appear after the first few minutes.
- Base notes: vanilla, amber, woods, musk or tonka bean. They give depth and sillage.
But the structure of the perfume is only half the story. The other half is you. Your skin’s hydration, temperature, pH and natural lipids influence how each note projects and lasts. No skin is better than another: each one simply tells the fragrance in its own way.
Dry skin tends to hold base notes less, so the perfume may feel shorter-lived. Well-hydrated skin lets sweet, balsamic and musky facets unfold more softly and for longer. If your favourite fragrance fades quickly, sometimes the problem isn’t the perfume but how the skin was prepared.
pH plays a part, but it doesn’t explain everything
pH is often mentioned as the big explanation, but it’s worth putting it in context. It stays within a fairly stable range and won’t turn a floral into something completely different; it only nuances how the scent develops, together with hydration and temperature.
Your natural scent counts too. It can make a musk more noticeable, a vanilla creamier or a wood slightly drier. That’s why two people can wear the same perfume and both feel it belongs to them. Diet, stress or hormonal changes can also alter it temporarily: if one day your perfume seems different, it probably hasn’t changed, you have.
Perfume and the Mediterranean climate
Luzaris was born in Barcelona, where the sun meets the sea, and that shows in how we experience perfume. Heat speeds up evaporation: fragrances project more at first, especially those with citrus, fruit, white flowers or spices. In the cold, perfume stays closer to the skin and the deeper notes take longer to open.
In a Mediterranean city, with light and humidity for much of the year, the luminous compositions of our Eau de Parfum shine especially by day. More intense fragrances, like our amber, resin or vanilla Extrait de Parfum, come into their own on autumn and winter nights. A good tip: keep one perfume for the sun and another for the night.
Clothes and routine: what adds (or takes away)
- Clothes: fabrics hold scent and make it last longer. Test first on a hidden area, as some formulas can mark delicate garments.
- Hair: for a more enveloping trail, use a perfume made for hair, such as our Body Mist & Hair Parfum, instead of your usual perfume.
- Body products: a heavily scented shower gel or a sunscreen with tropical notes will compete with your fragrance. Choose neutral products or scents that pair well with it.
How to test a perfume to know if it’s right for you
- Apply it to the inside of your wrist or forearm, without rubbing: rubbing warms the skin and rushes the top notes.
- Wait 20 to 30 minutes to discover the heart of the fragrance.
- Smell it again after 2 or 3 hours. That’s when you’ll find the base that stays with you.
- Don’t test more than 3 or 4 perfumes at a time. Between tests, step outside for some fresh air for a few minutes; it works better than smelling coffee beans.
If you don’t know where to start, our AI fragrance test suggests the Luzaris scents that suit you best in 30 seconds. We explain it in detail in Perfume quiz: find your ideal fragrance.
But the most reliable way to decide is to wear each perfume for a full day: at work, at dinner, on the metro. That’s why we created the Luzaris Discovery Sets: five fragrances for €19.90, to try calmly, on your skin and in your real life. You can choose one of our selections or build your own set with your favourites from our 32 scents. Each set also includes a 30% coupon for your next online purchase, so when you find your fragrance, the full size costs you less.
How to make your perfume last longer
- Moisturise first with an unscented cream or one with a compatible scent.
- Spray from a few centimetres away onto pulse points: wrists, neck, inner elbow.
- Less is more with higher concentrations: an extrait needs less than an Eau de Parfum.
- Don’t keep it in the bathroom: light, heat and temperature changes degrade it. A cool, dark cupboard is better. If the liquid changes colour a lot or smells sour, it may be oxidised.

Choose according to the evolution you’re looking for
Do you like light, direct fragrances? Look for citrus, clean or aquatic compositions, knowing they will be more fleeting. Prefer depth and longevity? Vanilla, resins, woods, amber and musks will give you a longer-lasting trail.
Unisex fragrances are especially free territory: a fig can be green or creamy, a wood soft or luminous, a floral clean or sensual, depending on the skin. There are no fixed rules, only the feeling you want to leave behind: fresh, silky, intense, spicy or enveloping.
