In our shop on Carrer de Boters, right in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, it is one of the questions we hear most often in front of the bottles: what really changes between an EDP and an EDT? A perfume can feel like a freshly ironed shirt, an afternoon in the sun by the sea or the last gesture before leaving home. That is why understanding the difference between eau de parfum and eau de toilette is not just about reading a label: it helps you choose a fragrance that matches your rhythm, your skin and the impression you want to leave.
People often think the choice comes down to “stronger” or “softer”. The reality is more interesting. Concentration shapes the presence and evolution of a scent, yes, but composition, temperature, skin hydration and the way you apply it also matter. Two perfumes in the same category can be experienced in completely different ways.
Difference between eau de parfum and eau de toilette: concentration
The main difference lies in the proportion of aromatic concentrate diluted in alcohol and other ingredients. An eau de parfum, or EDP, usually contains a higher concentration than an eau de toilette, or EDT. As a guide, an eau de parfum typically ranges between 15 % and 20 % fragrance oil, while an eau de toilette usually sits roughly between 5 % and 15 %.
Above both sits extrait de parfum, the highest concentration, and below them are body mists and hair perfumes, designed for a very light feel. If you want to explore the more intense end, we cover it in what is extrait de parfum and when to choose it.
These figures are not a fixed rule. Every perfume house works with its own formulas: a citrus eau de toilette can project vividly at first, and a soft woody eau de parfum can feel intimate and serene. The category is a guide, but it never replaces the experience on your skin.
In general, an eau de parfum gives a richer, deeper and more enveloping impression. It leaves room for the heart and base notes to unfold slowly: creamy flowers, elegant vanillas, warm amber or silky woods. An eau de toilette tends to show a lighter, brighter profile with an especially fresh and direct opening.
What changes when you wear an eau de parfum
An eau de parfum can be a good choice if you want a fragrance with more body or one that stays with you through a long day, a dinner, a trip or a special occasion. That does not mean it has to be overpowering: a well-balanced EDP can feel luminous, clean and easy to wear.
Its evolution is one of its greatest charms. When you spray it, you notice the top notes, which may be fruity, citrus or aromatic. Then the heart appears, where flowers or spices settle, and over the hours the base notes add warmth and depth. If you are wondering how many hours to expect, we explain it in how long eau de parfum lasts on the skin.
Still, more concentration does not mean more sprays. If your eau de parfum has character, start with a little and adjust according to how your skin responds. Leaving a mark does not require filling the whole room.
At Luzaris we work mainly in eau de parfum for exactly this reason: it offers a lovely balance of presence, evolution and comfort, at affordable luxury prices.
When to choose an eau de toilette
An eau de toilette is a great choice if you prefer an airy, clean or refreshing feel. It works beautifully on warm days, at the office, after a shower or whenever you want to wear scent without it taking over the room.
Citrus, green, aquatic, aromatic and musky profiles express themselves naturally at this concentration. Think of a linen shirt or a Mediterranean breeze. If that is what you are after, you can also get it from a fresh eau de parfum applied with a light hand, or from a body mist you can reapply during the day.
Our selection by the effect you are looking for
To turn theory into something practical, we have grouped some Luzaris fragrances by the feeling they leave. The notes listed are those of each composition.
Fresh and luminous: the lightness of an EDT with the evolution of an EDP
- Alba de Iris: African orange flower, neroli, mandarin and iris, like a clear morning in Barcelona.
- Aventura: bergamot, juniper and cedar for a fresh, confident character.
- Libertad: lavender and orange blossom, a Mediterranean breeze on the skin.
- Cielo: citrus and woody notes, serene and clean.
Florals with body: the most enveloping side of eau de parfum
- Divina: orange, jasmine and patchouli, luminous and sophisticated.
- Oro Divino: jasmine, ylang-ylang and Tahitian vanilla, like golden sunset light.
- Tesoro: white honey, orange blossom and amber.
- Secreto: a powdery accord, pear, tuberose and patchouli for the evening.
More concentration: the INTENSE line
If, after trying an EDP, you feel you want even more depth, the INTENSE line in extrait de parfum goes one step further:
- Fiesta de Luz INTENSE: neroli, cedar and amber.
- Ella INTENSE: rose, musk and patchouli on a powdery base.
- Bruma INTENSE: floral and powdery accords with violet.
- Tierra de Luz INTENSE: a woody, spicy profile.
Maximum lightness: body mist and hair perfume
And if what you love most about eau de toilette is that airy, easy-to-reapply feel, take a look at our body mists and hair parfums. We explain the differences in what is body mist and how to apply them in how to use hair perfume.
Sillage and longevity: why they do not depend on the label alone
Sillage is the scent trail that people around you notice. Longevity is how long you keep perceiving the fragrance on your skin or clothes. Although eau de parfum usually has more presence than eau de toilette, both depend on much more than concentration.
Raw materials matter a lot. Citrus and aquatic notes tend to evaporate sooner than amber, resinous, woody or vanilla accords. That is why a fresh fragrance can feel lively at first, while a warmer one stays steadily close to the skin. Neither option is better: they answer different desires.
Your skin also changes the result. Dry skin can make a scent feel faint sooner, while well-hydrated skin tends to support a more even evolution. Applying an unscented body lotion before your perfume can help.
Climate matters too. In the heat, notes diffuse faster; in the cold, sweet, spicy and woody fragrances come to the fore. That is why the same choice can feel different on an August morning in Barcelona and on a winter night.
How to apply each concentration with balance
With an eau de toilette, you can spray on pulse points such as the neck and wrists, and add a light mist over your clothes if the fabric allows it.
With an eau de parfum, it is best to start with less. One or two sprays may be enough, especially if the composition is intense, sweet or spicy. The chest, the nape of the neck or the inside of the elbows are good areas for the scent to evolve naturally. With an extrait, one spray is often enough.
Avoid rubbing your wrists after applying: it can alter the opening of the fragrance. It is better to let the perfume settle on its own.
Do not choose by season alone
Eau de parfum is often linked to the evening and eau de toilette to the daytime, but that rule can hold you back. An eau de parfum with citrus, neroli or orange blossom can be beautiful for an outdoor lunch, and a woody composition can bring real personality to an evening date.
Rather than following a formula, think about how you want to feel. If you want an enveloping presence, a deeper, warmer composition may suit you. If you are drawn to clarity and freshness, you may enjoy a luminous profile more. And if you like both, having options for different moments is a simple way to express different sides of your identity.
Trying before deciding makes the difference
You never truly know a perfume from a blotter. Give the fragrance time, watch how it evolves and ask yourself whether you still like it once the opening notes have settled.

And if you are in Barcelona, come and visit us at Carrer de Boters 11: trying an EDP and an extrait side by side on your skin is the clearest way to feel the difference.
The best choice is not the one with the most intense label, but the one that makes you recognise yourself when you breathe in your own fragrance.
