In our shop in the Gothic Quarter, at Carrer de Boters 11, we see the same scene every day: someone falls in love with a perfume in the first second and, hours later, realises it wasn’t the one they wanted to wear every day. That’s why knowing how to test perfumes before buying changes the whole experience: it’s not just about spotting a note you like, but discovering how it transforms on your skin, what feeling it leaves and whether it suits the way you move through the world. At Luzaris we create fragrances born where the sun meets the sea, and we love it when people choose them without rushing.
Choosing doesn’t have to be complicated or technical. All it takes is slowing down, paying attention to a few details and giving the fragrance time to speak.
How to test perfumes before buying, properly
The most common mistake is deciding in the first few minutes. When you spray a fragrance, you first notice its top notes: the most volatile ones, which create that fresh, sparkling, fruity or spicy first impression. They matter, but they don’t tell the whole story.
Then comes the heart of the perfume, where its personality usually lies. Flowers, woods, fruits or spices begin to settle and blend with your skin’s natural scent. Later come the base notes, which add depth and tend to stay with you longest: musks, amber, vanilla, woods or resins, depending on the composition. If you want to know how many hours each stage can last, we explain it in how long an eau de parfum lasts on the skin.
So give a perfume at least a few hours before deciding. Smell your wrist again without bringing it too close to your nose and ask yourself something simple: do I still want to wear it? The answer is usually more useful than trying to name every ingredient.
Start with a blotter, but don’t stop there
Paper testing strips are a very useful first step. They let you compare several fragrances without overloading your skin and recognise the families you’re naturally drawn to: vibrant citrus, silky florals, creamy sweetness, elegant woods or spices with character.
Spray once on each strip, wait a few seconds and smell from a short distance. If one fragrance stands out, write down its name or take a photo of the strip so you don’t lose it among so many options.
Still, paper is no substitute for skin. It has no temperature, no movement and not the pH of each person. A composition can seem very fresh on a strip and turn warmer on your skin. The real encounter happens when you wear it.
Choose just two or three finalists
Testing too many perfumes in a row confuses even a trained nose. When you visit us in the shop, we suggest trying several options on strips first and keeping a maximum of two or three finalists for your skin: one on each wrist and, if needed, a third on the inside of the elbow.
Don’t rub your wrists. That very common gesture changes how the top notes evaporate and makes you perceive the perfume differently. Spray, let it dry and carry on with your day. A fragrance needs space, not hurry.
Three families to start choosing finalists
If you’re not sure what to put on your skin, these ideas from our Eau de Parfum collection help you compare very different styles:
Luminous and sparkling
- Sincero: bergamot, birch and exotic spices.
- Divina: orange, jasmine and patchouli.
- Destino: smoky pineapple, moss and ambergris.
Floral and fruity
- Rosa Urbana: strawberries, musk and jasmine.
- Flor de Fuego: blackcurrant, rose and patchouli.
- Sol Rosado: floral, fresh notes that evoke the morning breeze.
Warm and enveloping
- Alma Libre: jasmine, chestnut and vanilla.
- Sombra Viajera: oud and raspberry.
- Oro Vivo: spicy and woody notes.
Try one perfume from each family and notice which one you want to smell again in the afternoon. If you’re after even more presence, our INTENSE line in Extrait de Parfum offers high-concentration versions.
Test the perfume on a normal day
A perfume doesn’t live only in front of a shop mirror. It goes with you on the metro, a stroll through El Born, a lunch, a meeting or a dinner that runs late. If you can, test it on a day that resembles the days you imagine wearing it.
Notice how you feel with it over the hours. Is it pleasant in an enclosed space? Do you feel like bringing your wrist to your nose? Does it add to your style without taking over?
The weather matters too. Citrus and bright florals tend to feel especially comfortable on warm days, while sweeter, spicy or woody compositions gain presence when temperatures drop. These aren’t strict rules: what matters is how you wear it.
Mind the context before smelling
Arrive with your skin as neutral as possible. An unscented body cream is fine, but avoid perfumed lotions, strong oils or heavily scented hair products. If you’ve been cooking or smoking, or your nose is tired or blocked, it may not be the best moment to decide: keep the strip, come back later and start again calmly.
Coffee, by the way, doesn’t magically reset your sense of smell. Resting for a few minutes and breathing fresh air usually works better. Your nose appreciates breaks.
Decide by the moment, not just the olfactory family
Two floral perfumes can convey very different feelings: one may recall a freshly ironed shirt; another, a golden afternoon by the sea. Think about the place you want the perfume to have in your routine: your everyday scent, a choice for going out, a fragrance for work or a special gift.
Don’t force yourself to choose by women’s, men’s or unisex labels. Perfume understands skin, memory and taste. If it makes you feel good, it makes sense for you.
A simple trick to explore a family without committing is to start with a light mist. Our Body Mist & Hair Parfum let you try profiles such as Medianoche (bergamot, black tea and jasmine), Brisa Rosa (rose water, pink grapefruit and musk) or Romance (golden amber, cherry and soft cream).
When you can’t visit the shop: test at home
Buying online doesn’t mean choosing blindly. A sample set lets you take the process at your own pace. Our Discovery Sets include 5 fragrances for €9.90, as ready-made selections or with the “create your own” option, choosing from 32 essences. Plus, every set comes in a box inspired by Barcelona’s trencadís. We explain how to make the most of it in our guide to the perfume sample kit.
Dedicate one fragrance to each day. Apply it in the morning, jot down a short impression after a few minutes and come back to it a few hours later. Phrases like “warmer than I expected”, “I love the dry-down” or “too sweet for every day” are enough. By the third or fourth try, your preferences usually become very clear.
Not sure where to start? Our AI fragrance test guides you in just 30 seconds based on your tastes and the kind of feeling you’re looking for. We explain how it works in the test to find your ideal perfume. Then, testing on your skin is what confirms the decision.
Trust your own reaction, not everyone else’s opinion
A second opinion can be useful, especially when choosing a gift. But perfume is perceived up close and becomes part of your presence. Look for a more intimate reaction: the feeling that the scent accompanies you naturally. It might remind you of a clear morning in Barcelona, clean sheets, freshly cut fruit or a summer night.
If you’d like to test without hurry and with advice, visit us in the shop or take a look at our promotions and offers. The best test isn’t finding a perfume everyone likes. It’s coming home, smelling your skin a few hours later and thinking: I want to wear it tomorrow too.
