There is a very familiar moment in front of a perfume display: several bottles catch your eye, you try one, then another, and after a few minutes everything seems to blur together. This fragrance families guide brings order to that feeling. It is not about putting you in a box, but about giving you words to understand what moves you in a fragrance so you can choose with more confidence.
At Luzaris we see it every day in our shop at Carrer de Boters 11, in the heart of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter: someone walks in looking for “something fresh” and leaves in love with a warm wood. We were born where the sun meets the sea, and our fragrances travel through every family, from the citrus of a Mediterranean morning to the amber of a night in El Born. Perhaps you are drawn to the sparkling opening of a citrus scent on a sunny street; perhaps you prefer the warmth of vanilla at dinner. No preference is better than another: perfume works when it accompanies the way you are in the world.
What are fragrance families?
Fragrance families are broad groups that bring together scents with a similar character. They are not a fixed formula or a final label. A perfume can open with citrus, reveal a floral heart and settle on creamy woods. That is why two compositions from the same family can feel very different on the skin.
Think of them as a map to find your way. They help you recognise patterns in the perfumes you already enjoy and explore new territory without choosing blindly. They also clear up a common confusion: notes describe specific ingredients or nuances, while the family expresses the overall impression the composition leaves.
The classification can vary depending on the school of perfumery. Some group amber fragrances under the name oriental; others treat fruity or gourmand scents as categories of their own. To choose well, it matters less to memorise a system and more to identify the sensations you are looking for. Below, for each family, we suggest several fragrances from our Eau de Parfum collection and our INTENSE line of Extrait de Parfum, with their real notes.
Fragrance families guide: find your style
Citrus and fresh: light, energy and lightness
Citrus fragrances usually revolve around bergamot, lemon, mandarin, orange or neroli. They convey cleanliness, open air and a luminous energy that is especially suited to warm days, active mornings or moments when you want to feel clear-headed. Some stay transparent and minimalist; others gain depth with a woody or amber base.
- Sol Naranja: clementine blossom, orange blossom, white lilac and water lily on a base of iris and vetiver. A clean, sophisticated floral citrus.
- Esencia Pura: bergamot and amber wood, for those who want freshness with a reassuring base.
- Cielo: citrus and woody notes that evoke the Mediterranean horizon.
- Fiesta de Luz: neroli, cedar and amber; a luminous citrus that also works at night.
Floral: delicacy, presence and many facets
The floral family covers much more than a romantic bouquet. Here you find velvety rose, enveloping jasmine, radiant orange blossom, violet and creamier or sunnier flowers. A sheer floral can feel like laundry drying in the sun; an intense white floral has a more enveloping, nocturnal presence. If you think florals are not for you, try a flower paired with fruit, musk or lavender: it completely changes its personality.
- Rosa: Grasse rose, neroli and white musk. A classic, radiant rose.
- Rosa Urbana: strawberries, musk and jasmine, a young and juicy floral.
- Bruma: floral accords and violet, ethereal and a little mysterious.
- Libertad: lavender and orange blossom, an aromatic floral with a Mediterranean breeze.
Fruity and gourmand: a juicy or comforting trail
Fruity fragrances evoke pulp, juice and colour: pear, strawberry, apple or red berries bring a vibrant or luminous profile. The gourmand family is inspired by notes associated with indulgence, such as vanilla, cocoa, caramel, coffee or honey. It tends to appeal to those looking for a warm, approachable fragrance. Balance is key: compositions with spices, flowers or woods keep that delicious side without making it heavy. If you worry about too much sweetness, read our guide to sweet perfumes that are not cloying.
- Dulce de Luz: caramel, golden honey and coumarin over vanilla and white musk.
- Diosa de Luz: vanilla, cocoa and lavender; a gourmand with an aromatic touch.
- Seductora: coffee, jasmine and vanilla for Barcelona nights.
- Secreto: pear, tuberose and patchouli with a powdery nuance; fruity with a hint of mystery.
Aromatic and spicy: freshness with character
Lavender, rosemary, sage or juniper shape the aromatic territory: they recall the Mediterranean landscape and sun-warmed vegetation. Spices such as pepper, cardamom, cinnamon or clove add contrast and rhythm. A spicy fragrance can be fresh when it leans on fruit or citrus, or intense when combined with vanilla, balsams and woods. If you are looking for more masculine ideas, you will find more options in our article on spicy men’s perfume.
- Noche de Fuego: pink pepper, orange blossom and clove; roasted chestnut, guaiac wood and juniper; a base of vanilla and Peru balsam.
- Viento de Miel: lavender, honey and sweet tobacco.
- Único Intense: green apple and melon with cardamom and cinnamon, in high concentration.
- Caballero: lavender, iris and patchouli, an elegant aromatic.
Woody, amber and leather: calm, texture and depth
Cedar, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli and oud give body to woody fragrances: they can be dry, earthy, creamy or slightly smoky. Amber scents bring together resins, labdanum, vanilla and balsams, with an enveloping presence that shines when temperatures drop. Leather, for its part, evokes suede, tobacco or a polished texture. These are profiles with personality that are best tried slowly.
- Oud Rosa BCN: amber labdanum, velvety rose and saffron over woods and oud.
- Sabio: Tuscan iris, leather and oud wood.
- Noche Oscura: rum and leather, intense and sophisticated.
- Aventura: pine needles, incense and cedar.
How to recognise the family that attracts you most
Instead of starting with a category, start with your own memories. Think about the scents you choose outside the perfumery: do you like the peel of a freshly cut citrus fruit, a white flower at sunset, coffee, pale wood, spices in the kitchen or the green smell of a garden? Your answers usually point in a more reliable direction than any gender label.
It also helps to notice when you want to wear the perfume. For work or daytime plans, you may appreciate citrus, musks, soft flowers or clean woods. For a date or a special night, you might fancy a more intense, enveloping composition. Even so, there are no rigid rules: if an amber scent represents you in August or a citrus keeps you company in winter, that is reason enough. And if you also want to decide how much your perfume should project, our perfume sillage guide explains how concentration and application play a part.
Also notice what you have liked and what has tired you about other fragrances. If you enjoy a fresh opening but lose interest when sweetness appears, look for citrus, aromatic or dry woody scents. If you love a warm base but not dominant floral notes, gourmand, amber or woody options may suit you better. Would you like a quick hint? Our AI fragrance test analyses your tastes in about 30 seconds and suggests scents from the collection.
Try a perfume over time, not just on first impression
The first spray counts, but it does not tell the whole story. Top notes are the most volatile and usually welcome you with citrus, fruit or fresh accords. Then comes the heart, where flowers, spices or aromatic notes reveal the central character. Finally comes the base, often made up of woods, musks, vanilla or resins.
Try the fragrance on your skin and let it evolve for at least a few hours before deciding. Your temperature, your skin’s hydration and even the weather can change how you perceive a composition. Avoid trying too many in a row: three or four are enough to keep your nose alert and compare clearly.
That is why we created the Luzaris Discovery Sets: 5 fragrances for just €9.90, in ready-made selections or with the “create your own” option to choose from 32 essences. You can mix one from each family and live with them for several days. Every set includes a 30% coupon for your next online purchase and arrives in a box inspired by Barcelona’s trencadís mosaics. If you prefer to smell them in person, we look forward to welcoming you at our Gothic Quarter shop.
Perfume changes, but your judgement can stay
Knowing the fragrance families does not mean always choosing the same thing. It helps you discover why a fragrance makes you feel comfortable, magnetic, calm or full of energy, and gives you the courage to try a close variation. If you like citrus, your next step might be a woody citrus like Fiesta de Luz; if you adore vanilla, a spicy vanilla like Noche de Fuego may surprise you. And if the Mediterranean is your thing, discover how to choose a perfume with a Mediterranean scent.
Let your nose have the final say. The right family is not the one that looks best on paper, but the one that, when you wear it, feels like a natural part of you.
